IMMACULATA, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy was able to pull away from Immaculata, 91-84, in a Colonial States Athletic Conference contest Wednesday evening to send the Griffins to their third win in a row.
Cedric Elleby scored 19 of his game-high 24 points in the second half and his 17 rebounds were also tops.
Arron Goodman also recorded a double-double, totaling 17 points and 11 boards.
Rip Engel chipped in 16 while
Matt Sommers connected on three of the team's six three-pointers to end up with 11 for the Griffins (13-3, 7-2 CSAC).
This game had plenty of drama, as a total of 13 ties and 18 lead changes took place. GM would take the lead for good with 6:11 remaining, but had to fend off a late Mighty Mac push.
Eric Pittman Jr. led IU (7-9, 5-4 CSAC) with 21 points and Jordan Ambrose added 18. The Griffins were able to outrebound Immaculata, 60-42, for the game and hit 17-of-24 attempts (70%) at the free-throw line in the second half compared to a 11-of-20 (55%) effort by the Mighty Macs.
Goodman's three-point play was the icing on top of a 12-3 run to start the game. However, Immaculata would score seven points in a row and would eventually take a 20-19 lead on a three-pointer form Matt Simon at the 6:39 mark. GM would trail, 37-34 at the half.
After keeping within arm's reach within the early stages of the second, Pittman Jr. would hit a trifecta to give IU its largest lead of the contest (58-50) with 13 minutes to go. Ambrose would connect from downtown a few minutes later to put the Griffins in a 63-55 deficit. But back came Gwynedd Mercy, using a 12-4 spurt, capped off with a triple from Sommers to knot the contest at 67-67 with eight and change to play. After Elleby's go-ahead basket, GMercyU would construct a lead a large as 84-75 after two free throws from Engel with 2:01 left.
Immaculata was able to chip at the lead, and after a three from Pittman with 19 seconds, got it to a one-possession game at 87-84. Gwynedd would put the game out of reach as free throws from Engel and
Ty Jones down the stretch was enough to cement the road win.
Jones would finish with six points, four assists, and a pair of steals. After shooting a hair under 40% in the first half, the team responded with an 18-of-34 (52%) line in the second. Immaculata would finish the night at a 27-of-82 (32%) shooting clip.
Gwynedd Mercy returns home on Saturday to continue CSAC play with a matchup with Centenary here at The Griffin Complex at 1 p.m.
