GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy and Penn College battled for 110 minutes but settled for a well fought 1-1 tie Wednesday night in a non-conference matchup.
Freshman
Madeline Swartley scored her second goal on the season in the first half and sophomore goalie
Kailey Hopkins totaled a career-high 13 saves in the contest as both teams fought through the humid conditions.
At the 14:12 of the first stanza, Swartley was able to knock in a cross from a corner kick.
Grace Macnamara picked up the assist, her second on the year. Despite being outshot, 7-2, in the first 45 minutes, GMercyU would still hold a 1-0 edge at the break, thanks to Hopkins, who made six stops.
In the second, the Griffins (1-1-1) were called for a foul in their own box and the resulting penalty kick from Lauren Herr in the 61st minute would tie things up at 1-1. Gwynedd responded with five quality shots throughout the remainder of the half, but Penn College goalie, Colleen Bowes came up with the critical saves. She would total six stops in the period.
The overtime had plenty of drama, as each team had several prime chances to win it. The first over time resulted in two shots each from both squads. The Griffins fired off five shots in the in the second overtime, including a great look from
Ariety Fellenz, but her rocket sailed just over the crossbar.
Bowes totaled nine saves for the Wildcats (0-1-1).
The Griffins outshot Penn College, 18-17, for the game and had a 5-3 corner kick advantage.
Gwynedd will host Lycoming College this Saturday at 1 p.m.
