GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Freshman
Matt Bachman scored twice 3:41 apart in the second half to help lift Gwynedd Mercy to a 2-1 win over Penn State-Brandywine Tuesday afternoon.
Rookie goalie
Tyler Blair recorded six saves in his first collegiate start and victory.
Trailing 1-0 at the half, the Griffins (2-1) opened up their offense, registering 11 of their 19 shots in the second stanza. In the first, Gwynedd's best look came in the 17th minute as a header from
Danny Saba off a corner kick found the crossbar.
Bachman netted his first on the day at the 59:49 mark as he followed up a rebound from a shot by
Chris Black for an easy tap in to knot it up at 1-1. Black would pick up the assist.
He would strike again in at 63:30 as he got just enough on a header off a long throw in by
Eric Smith to redirect it past Brandywine goalie Joe Opednaker. Smith was credited with the assist. From there Blair and the Griffin defense yielded just one shot the rest of the way to help preserve the win.
Opdenaker finished with four stops and teammate Anthony Neufville had the lone goal for Penn State (1-1).
Gwynedd Mercy heads to Johns Hopkins on Saturday in Baltimore in a 4 p.m. start.
