CHESTERTOWN, MD. -- Two early first half goals by Washington College put Gwynedd Mercy in a sudden deficit as the Griffins came up a bit short in a 2-1 loss to the Shorewomen on Saturday.
Just one minute into the contest, Washington got on the board on a goal from Paige Cahoon. Just over eight minutes later, at the 9:11 mark, a breakaway tally from Maribeth Harrington suddenly made it a 2-0 contest.
The Griffins (1-1) did answer later in the half as freshman
Madeline Swartley notched her first collegiate goal as she headed in a corner kick in the 25th minute off the foot of
Grace Macnamara. The 2-1 score remained until the half.
Goalie
Kailey Hopkins helped keep Gwynedd in it, making four of her seven saves in the second half. Shorewomen keeper Courtney Colbert recorded the shutout for WC (2-0).
Gwynedd Mercy will look to rebound on Wednesday evening when they host Penn College in their 2016 home opener here at 6 p.m.
