GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. – Alvernia's Margaret Wentzel had two goals and an assist as Gwynedd Mercy fell, 4-1, to the Crusaders Saturday afternoon.
Abigail Gabriel scored the lone tally for the Griffins (1-1), who trailed 1-0 at the half. Gwynedd looked to get on the board in the first minute of the game as they were awarded a penalty stroke, but
Brianna O'Connell's attempt was saved by goalie Rebecca Brosious.
Wentzel would strike off a penalty corner with 3:52 left in the half for a 1-0 score. Gwynedd was outshot, 10-2, in the opening 35 minutes.
The second half saw the Griffins start to find their groove offensively, firing off 11 shots. However Brosious would frustrate Gwynedd as she recorded seven of her eight saves over the final stanza. Not to be outdone, GM goalie
Samantha Soscia registered seven saves in the contest.
A bit of bad luck struck in the 51st minute as a pass across the crease on a 2-on-1 play deflected off a Griffin defender into the net. GMercyU would answer just over 11 minutes later with Gabriel's first goal on the season off an assist from
Maggie Walsh.
But Alvernia would take the wind out of the Griffin sails with a goal just 36 seconds later to reclaim a two-goal lead. Wentzel would add her second on the day in the 66th minute to account for the scoring.
Gwynedd had all of their six corners in the second half, while Alvernia totaled four. The Crusaders outshot the Griffins, 18-13.
The Griffins look to get back on track on Tuesday when they visit Delaware Valley in a 4 p.m. start.
