Griffins Battle, But Come Up Short In Close Contest

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy and Rutgers-Camden battled through a total of 19 lead changes, 33 ties and two extended sets, but it was the Scarlet-Raptors leaving The Griffin Complex with a 3-1 win (28-26, 25-20, 22-25, 28-26) Thursday night to snap the Griffin's three-match winning streak.

Casey Griffith and Maggie Gorman combined for 33 of the team's season-high 52 kills as each recorded double-doubles. Gorman and teammate Laura Kirk each had 17 digs while Griffith shoveled up 13. Liz Schule added eight kills while Abreeanna Bisenius totaled five kills, five digs and two blocks (one solo). The team had season highs in all attacking categories in the thrilling four setter.

In the first set, the Griffins (7-7) never led until a 4-0 spurt would put them ahead, 17-15. Rutgers responded with a 7-3 run and put GMercyU on their heels to lead 22-20 and force a timeout. A four-point swing highlighted by three kills from Gorman put the set win in sight, but Rutgers took advantage of two attack errors to knot things up at 24-24. Both teams fought off set point to get to 26-26 before back-to-back kills from Caitlin Marchlowicz and Jordan Erskine put the Scarlet Raptors on top for good.

After Gwynedd took a 3-0 lead to start the second set, R-C would rally to get it to 8-8. Later, at 17-15, Rutgers would score seven of the next eight points to nearly close it out. The Griffin comeback started with a kill from Griffith, to kickstart four-straight points, but the Scarlet Raptors would take it, 25-20.

The Griffins would pull out the third set thanks to a key four-point run, highlighted by a big double block from Bisenius and Jessica Behr, to put GMercyU up 23-18 and force a Rutgers timeout. R-C would inch closer with four points, but Gorman sent it to a fourth set with her clinching kill.

In the fourth, things didn't get off to a good start, as the Griffins fell behind, 6-1. The deficit would grow to 11-4 and later 17-11. On the next serve, a kill from Gorman would ignite a 7-0 run to give Gwynedd its first lead (18-17). After the teams traded points, Erskine tallied two kills to put R-C up 24-23 and on the brink of the win. The Griffins rallied with two points to shift the momentum, but it was Rutgers who was able to get the last two points after a 26-26 tie to seal the win.

Erskine led Rutgers-Camden (10-9) with 12 kills and teammate Caitlynn Marcano added 23 assists and 11 digs for a double-double. The team would hit at a .104 clip on the night (49-32-164).

Gwynedd totaled a .124 hitting line (52-31-169) but had a total of 20 unforced errors.

The team will host Marywood and Valley Forge here on Saturday in a tri-match and will host its Senior Day. Things kick off at noon with the Pacers and Griffins in a CSAC clash. Marywood will then take on Valley Forge at 2 p.m. in the sandwich match before Gwynedd takes on the Patriots at 4 p.m.
