Griffin Defense Clamps Down On Defenders

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- The Griffins posted their third shutout in a row with a 2-0 blanking against the Defenders of Clarks Summit University on Saturday.

Gwynedd Mercy (4-2-2, 2-0 CSAC) came out strong with four shots in the first 20 minutes to Clarks Summit's two. Freshman Samantha Brown netted the first goal of her collegiate career off a beautiful assist from junior Sarah Nedwick in the 23rd minute. The Griffins took five more shots that half, but the Defenders lived up to their name, pulling off four saves from goalie Elysia Hinkel.

Not be outdone, keeper Kailey Hopkins also made four stops in the first 45 minutes to keep it 1-0 at the half.

The second half got off on the right foot, so to speak, as Megan Petroski converted a penalty kick after a foul in the box. The goal was her team-leading sixth and her first career penalty score.

In total, the Griffins tallied 21 shots throughout to the Defenders right. Hopkins would finish with six crucial saves while Elysia Hinkel finished the game with nine for Clarks Summiit (1-6, 0-2 CSAC).

The Griffins are off until next Saturday, when they head up to Centenary for a CSAC tilt starting at 1 p.m.
