GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- The Gwynedd Mercy University Field Hockey team suffered a heartbreaking 1-0 overtime defeat Saturday afternoon against nationally-ranked Montclair State University.
The tenth-ranked (NFHCA) Redhawks scored the game's lone goal just under ten minutes into the first overtime. Kaitlyn Struss capitalized on a breakaway opportunity set up by Megan Roeloffs to beat the outstretched pad of Griffin goalie
Samantha Soscia.
Soscia had another strong performance in goal, making eight saves on the day. Her counterpart Kaitlin Maguire made one stop.
The Griffins (4-4) had a golden opportunity rescinded. They scored what appeared to be the eventual go-ahead goal late in the second half; however it was disallowed due to a raised ball.
For the game, Montclair (7-3) outshot GMercyU, 10-4, and held an 11-3 corner advantage.
Noelle Schillinger also had strong defensive day adding a defensive save.
The Griffins will return to action on Wednesday when they open up Colonial States Athletic Conference play. They will travel up to Scranton to take on Marywood at 7 p.m.
