Late Goal Propels Men's Soccer Over Mustangs In Season Opener

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. – Freshman Mike Czajka scored with 11:05 left in the contest to give Gwynedd Mercy a 2-1 win over Stevenson in their season opener Thursday afternoon.

Czajka put home a nicely placed header in the box off a cross from Josh Reimel. With the ball down near the right endline, Reimel was able to get a quick centering pass to Czajka who angled one to the back of the net.

The Griffins scored twice in the second half to win their first game of their season since 2011 in a victory over Delaware Valley.

Stevenson would break through late in the first when Iliyas Mirza was able to get a shot past a diving Ryan Oyola in the 38th minute for a 1-0 lead. The score stayed that way as the teams battled into the half.

In the 59th minute, Danny Saba took a nice feed from the foot of Chris Black to give Gwynedd its first goal of the season, and more importantly, knot the game at 1-1.

Oyola made three saves in the contest, but none bigger than right after the Griffins took the lead. His diving stop on Stevenson's Kelon Funyak helped preserve the win.

Gwynedd outshot the Mustangs, 15-10. Stevenson goalie Michael Tringali recorded four stops.

The Griffins (1-0) return to action on Saturday when they head to Goucher.
