GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy doubled up visiting Misericorida, 4-2, Thursday night as the Griffins claimed victory in their season opener.
Melissa Russo had a goal and an assist while
Brianna O'Connell,
Kaitlyn Lutz, and
Jamie McCarney also tallied for Gwynedd.
The Cougars struck first, early in the contest as Haley Gruber made it 1-0 at the 35:07 mark.
O'Connell's goal in the 23rd minute was the first of four in a row for the Griffins. She would dance around a defender on her way into the arc where she blasted one to the back of the net. Russo would follow suit just over a minute later for a 2-1 lead which stuck into the half.
Lutz made it 3-1 in the 59th minute as she picked up a loose ball in a scrum to add to the lead. McCarney capped the scoring binge, by netting her first career tally over five minutes after for a 4-1 edge.
Misericordia would tack on a score on a penalty corner with seconds remaining to cap the scoring.
Gwynedd outshot the Cougars, 9-6, and hosted five penalty corners to Misericorida's three.
Samantha Soscia made two saves in goal for the Griffins while Katelyn Campbell recorded three for the Cougars.
Prior to the contest, the team welcomed honorary captains, Matt and Judy Adams, from the "Dimes for Downs" which helps raise money to grant wishes for children and adults who have Down syndrome. There was a collection at halftime where funds were raised.
The Griffins welcome Alvernia here on Saturday in a 2 p.m. start.
