GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy and Marywood split a CSAC twinbill Wednesday afternoon with the Pacers taking game one, 8-6, and the Griffins storming back for a 9-1 win in the second game.
In game one, Gwynedd (12-6, 3-1 CSAC) came up short in their rally from an early 7-0 deficit. Marywood would plate two runs in the first on two hits and two errors and cross five in the second as two more errors and five hits were the main culprit.
After the Pacers made it 8-0 after the top of the third, Gwynedd got that run back thanks to a two-out RBI double from
Alyssa Morales.
RBI doubles from
MaryKate Ballerino and
Tara Matteo were part of a three-run fourth. In the next frame,
Jessica Behr cranked a two-run homer and
Kim Machalette doubled home Ballerino to pull GMercyU within two runs.
Gwynedd would get runners on over the final two innings, but the Pacers (6-8, 3-1 CSAC) were able to get two double plays, including one in the seventh to close out game one.
Behr and Machalette each had two hits for Gwynedd. On the mound, Machalette gave up three earned runs on 12 hits.
Alexa Scala was 2-for-4 with three RBI's for the Pacers.
Gwynedd Mercy returned the favor in game two, as they stormed out early to take a big lead. Morales would help the Griffins, holding Marywood to just one run on three hits, a walk, and a season-high six strikeouts.
Ballerino's RBI triple, followed by an RBI double from
Nikki Canfield was part of a four-run first. Ballerino struck again in the next frame, knocking home two runs with two outs and Morales drove home a run to give GMercyU a 7-0 lead.
The Griffins play at Notre Dame on Friday in a CSAC Doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
