Eighth Inning Go-Ahead Runs The Difference In Fourth-Straight Win

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- The Gwynedd Mercy University Baseball team earned its fourth win in a row with a come-from-behind victory to defeat Immaculata, 7-6, to open their weekend series against the Mighty Macs.

With the Griffins trailing, 6-5, in the bottom of the eighth, Jason Mulvey delivered a big two-out, two-run single to take the lead for good. Nick Mulvey started the rally with a single and Justin Curtin followed with a double to put runners in scoring position. Jason Mulvey came through with a single up the middle to plate both runners.  Sachael Sciarretta, who entered in the eighth, picked up the win in relief, working a scoreless ninth leaving a Mighty Mac stranded on second base.

Immaculata (19-17, 9-7 CSAC) struck first with a two-run single in the first inning by Ryan Ficca. The Griffins would respond in the home half when Dave Tatoian scored David Blount with a two-out single. Beau Fleming would follow with a single to put runners at the corners. Tatoian was able to tie the game 2-2 on a stolen base from third.

The Griffins (18-15, 9-4 CSAC) added two more runs in the bottom of the second again with two outs. Jason Mulvey scored Austin Heimbach and Curtin to put GMercyU on top 4-2.

Blount helped the Griffins in the third when he scored from second on a wild pitch. The throw down to third got away down the line for Gwynedd to take a 5-2 lead.

Neither teams would plate runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.

The Mighty Macs would answer in the top of the seventh. Pinch Hitter Justin Dempsey led off the inning with a single followed by a single from Rick DiDomenico. Lead-off hitter Jason McCormick would score Dempsey with a double followed by Mike Lascomb scoring DiDomenico on a ground out to second base to trail 5-4.

Immaculata would take the lead in the eighth. After both lead-off batters reached the Griffins went to the bullpen to Sciarretta to replace starter Gino Tripodi. Sciarretta got the first out but both runners would advance on a fly out. He then got Pat Devenney to hit a ground ball but a play at the plate knocked the ball away from the catcher to score the tying run. Dempsey would then give the Macs a 6-5 lead on a sacrifice fly.

The Griffins started the eighth with a pair of ground outs but rallied capped by the Mulvey two rbi single with two outs. Sciarretta allowed a one-out double to Lascomb, but he was able to retire the last two batters to notch the win.

Starter Gino Tripodi allowed three earned runs with two walks and three strikeouts while pitching into the eighth.

GMercyU returns to action tomorrow when they travel to Immaculata for a doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 12 p.m.
