IMMACULATA, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy dropped a Colonial States Athletic Conference Doubleheader on Saturday at Immaculata, falling, 5-4, in 10 innings in game one and a 5-1 decision in game two.
In game one, both teams went to extras after the Griffins came back from a 2-0 deficit with two runs in the sixth. With runners on first and second with one out,
Dave Tatoian singled home
Jason Mulvey and after a groundout to move the runners up to second and third,
Shaughn Wright reached on an infield hit to plate
David Blount.
Gwynedd (18-17, 9-6 CSAC) would threaten in the eighth, getting runners on the corners, but IU starter Dan Whalen ended the inning on a strikeout. The Griffins would get a key strikeout with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth from reliever
Sachael Sciarretta. GMercyU would break through in the 10th, getting a big two-out, two-run single from
Beau Fleming to score Blount and Tatoian for a 4-2 lead.
The bottom of the 10th began with a walk and single to put two runners on. After an out, IU's Howie Kalamets ended the extra inning affair with a home run down the left field line.
Blount and Wright each had three hits. Tatoian walked twice while Blount scored twice.
Fleming's RBI single in the first inning of game two staked the Griffins to an early advantage. The Mighty Macs would cross two in the third on a run-scoring hit and a wild throw to third on a pick-off attempt from the catcher.
IU made it 3-1 with a run on a bases loaded walk in the fifth. Gwynedd starter Mike DiIanni would limit any more damage, helping induce a 6-4-3 double play to end the frame.
Two unearned runs crossed home in the sixth to stretch the deficit to four runs. Gwynedd gave it a final push in the seventh, getting two on with one out. IU starter Ryan Blough would get a 5-4-3 twin-killing to end game 2.
Fleming had two of the team's six hits in the second game. DiIanni yielded two earned runs on seven hits in the decision. Blough would fan seven and walk one for IU (21-17, 11-17 CSAC).
Gwynedd Mercy hosts Ursinus on Monday before beginning a weekend set with Centenary. The Griffins need one win out of their three games with the Cyclones next weekend to cement a playoff spot.
