GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- The Griffins took down Cairn, 8-6, on Friday in a Colonial States Athletic Conference matchup to end a three-game slide.
Justin Curtin was 1-for-3 with a big bases-loaded clearing double in the fourth.
David Blount and
Beau Fleming each scored twice and added an RBI as Gwynedd rebounded from an early deficit.
The Highlanders scored four runs on six hits in the top of the first off of starter
Zach Dennis, but Dennis would settle in and allow just two hits over the next four-plus innings. In the fifth, and after the four-run fourth, he had to leave the contest after taking a line drive.
Pat Ryder entered and yielded just a run on two hits in 2.2 innings of work to get the win.
After Cairn took that early lead, the Griffins got two runs back in their first at bat. After a one-out single from
Christian Carmolingo, Blount drove him home with his triple to right center.
Dave Tatoian followed suit with his base knock to center to plate Blount.
In the second, Gwynedd got a big double play to help kickstart some momentum. With a runner on first and one out, Tatoian would snag a sharp liner off the bat of Caleb Lang. He would get up and fire back to first to get the runner and the inning ender.
Gwynedd would tie it at 4-4 in the third after Nardini would single home Fleming. Matt Trotman would come in a relieve starter Eric Stinglen. Now with a runner on third, Curtin's fly to left was deep enough to score
Chris Hens.
Dennis would sit the Highlanders down in order in the fourth before the offense took over in the bottom half. Fleming's one-out single would score Blount. Later with two outs and after Nardini was hit by a pitch to load the sacks, Curtin smacked one in the gap in left to score three runs and give Gwynedd an 8-4 lead.
Nick Mulvey followed with a single to center to try and score Curtin, but he was thrown out at the plate with a nice throw from center field.
Cairn would cross a run in the seventh on a sac fly and another in the eighth on an RBI single to cut the lead to two runs. Reliever
Sachael Sciarretta would get out a spot in that eighth, with runners on second and third with two down, he got the third out on a grounder to first.
Frank Chubb came on in the ninth and picked up his third save of the season.
Hens and Mulvey each added two hits while Tatoian extended his reached base streak to 17 games.
The two teams will meet tomorrow in Langhorne in a doubleheader starting at noon.
