LAPLUME, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy pounded out 28 hits and 25 runs in a CSAC sweep at Keystone on Saturday. The Griffins worked out a 9-8 win in game one then opened up for a 16-2 victory in game two.
Several players had major contributions in the twinbill sweep. Rookie
Becki Christoffers was 6-for-9 with seven runs scored, three doubles and a walk.
Tara Matteo was 5-for-9 with three RBI's and
Kim Machalette was 5-for-8 with five RBI's.
In game one, Gwynedd (11-5, 2-0 CSAC) plated four runs thanks to a two-run homerun from
Jessica Behr and later a two-run double from Machalette. After a two-run double from Lindsay Bucklaw in the bottom half, GMercyU got those two runs back in the second as Behr added an RBI single and later score from third on a fielder's choice.
A three-run homerun in the bottom of the third from Bucklaw pulled the host Giants (5-9, 0-2 CSAC) within one at 6-5.
A bases loaded walk in the fourth and an RBI double from
Michele Arechavala in the fifth upped the lead to 8-5.
Leading 8-7 going into the final inning, Machalette looked to give some breathing room with her solo homerun for a two-run lead. But after a run in the bottom half, the Griffins were able to lock down game one.
Christoffers was 3-for-5 with three runs while Machalette was 3-for-4 with three RBI's.
Alyssa Morales picked up the win on the mound for her team-leading seventh.
Game two saw the Griffins total 17 hits with a nine-run third to open up an already 7-0 lead.
MaryKate Ballerino was officially 2-for-2 with four RBI's and three runs and three walks. She went deep in the second with a three-run shot. Matteo was a perfect 4-for-4 with a pair of RBI's while Christoffers went 3-for-4 with four runs scored. In that nine-run third, Gwynedd used seven hits and two Keystone errors to put the game out of reach.
Machalette gave up two runs on eight hits in picking up her fourth win on the year.
Gwynedd Mercy's rescheduled game with Marywood for Sunday has been postponed with no makeup date at this time. Their next scheduled contest is Friday when they head to Notre Dame of Maryland for a twinbill starting at 3 p.m.
