LAPLUME, PA. -- The Gwynedd Mercy University Baseball team split a pair of games Saturday at Keystone College in Colonial States Athletic Conference action. The Giants won game one, 4-2, while the Griffins took the nightcap, 8-5.
A
Shaughn Wright two-run home run gave the Griffins an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning of game one. The Giants answered with runs in the second and third innings to tie the game 2-2. Still tied at 2-2 in the top of the sixth, Gwynedd loaded the bases with no outs but were unable to score a run against Keystone pitcher Felix Baez who got two strikeouts and a pop up to work himself out the jam.
The Giants would take the lead in the bottom of the sixth with a two-run homerun from Alex Herceg to give Keystone the 4-2 lead. The Giants would hold the Griffins off the scoreboard in the last inning to preserve the victory.
Gino Tripodi went six innings on the mound while striking out two batters in the loss.
In game two, it was Keystone jumping out to an early advantage, leading 3-0 after three full innings. The Griffins responded in the fourth with an RBI single by
David Blount to score
Dave Tatoian to cut the lead to 3-1.
GMercyU would take the lead in the fifth playing three runs on six hits in the frame to the spark the offensive attack. With the bases loaded and two outs,
Beau Fleming smoked a single to right field to plate two runs scoring
Jason Mulvey and
Justin Curtin to tie the game 3-3. Blount would add his second RBI single of the game, scoring
Christian Carmolingo to take the lead.
The Griffins (11-9, 4-1 CSAC) would add on four insurance runs in the sixth. A
Tommy Nardini double would open up the inning and then move up to third on a sacrifice bunt. Mulvey would score Nardini on a fielder's choice as Nardini beat the throw home from second base. An error on the play allowed Mulvey to take second base as the throw got away from the catcher and eventually taking third on a stolen base. He would later score on a wild pitch third strike on Carmolingo, who advanced to first. Tatoian would double home Carmolingo from first followed by a Fleming single to plate Tatoian for the 8-3 lead.
Keystone would add two runs in the bottom of the sixth to cut the lead to 8-5. The Griffins would be held scoreless in the seventh. In the bottom of the seventh, the Giants would get their leadoff batter on base but starting pitcher
Mike Di Ianni would get the next batter to fly out to right field to get the first out. The Griffins would go to the bullpen and call on
Frank Chubb for the final two outs. Chubb got a groundout and strikeout to end the game for the save.
Di Ianni worked six and a third innings striking out four to earn the victory for his fifth win on the year. Chubb recorded his second save. Tatoian, Fleming, and Nardini each had a pair of hits while Fleming knocked in three runs.
The Griffins return back to action on Monday hosting Keystone to close out the three game series. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
