GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy gave Cabrini its first CSAC loss with a big 2-0 win in the second game as the two teams split a CSAC Doubleheader Friday afternoon. The Cavaliers took the first game, 6-2, but saw the Griffins score two runs late in the contest to earn the win in game two.
After Cabrini took a 1-0 lead in their first at-bat in game one, GMercyU left runners in scoring position in the bottom half. The Cavaliers would take advantage in the second, plating three runs, two of which came on a bases loaded throwing error. With one out and the sacks full, a grounder to short was fired too high at home to get the force out, allowing the runner from second to score.
Gwynedd (17-7, 8-2 CSAC) would get on the board in the third as
Marisa Bentley worked a full-count walk and then come around to score on
Becki Christoffers' triple to right. Christoffers would score on as a throw to back to third on a double up try after a fly out to center went out of play. The game marked the 13th-straight contest she has reached base
In the sixth, the Griffins got two on with two outs, but Cabrini pitcher Jess Giordano was able to strikeout Bentley to end the inning. The Cavaliers (14-11, 11-1 CSAC) tacked on a run in the fourth and another in the sixth.
Alyssa Morales suffered the loss, allowing just two earned runs with two walks and two strikeouts. She would battle to get out of jams in the fifth and sixth.
Morales and
Jessica Behr each had two hits in game one.
In game two,
Kim Machalette broke a scoreless tie in the sixth with her RBI double with two outs. She would score in the very next at-bat on a double from
Tara Matteo.
On the mound, Machalette walked just one while striking out two. She would not allow an extra-base hit in picking up the win. She would get key groundouts to escape bases loaded trouble spots in the fourth and fifth. In all, she helped strand 12 Cabrini baserunners in the win.
Matteo was 3-for-3 with a stolen base while Behr once again added two hits and is on a 10-game hitting streak.
The squad will travel to Rosemont tomorrow to play two starting at 12 p.m.
