GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. --
Alyssa Morales picked up the win in game one and would nail down the save in game two to help Gwynedd Mercy to a CSAC Doubleheader sweep of visiting Centenary on Thursday.
Morales would yield just four earned runs and go a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate and score twice in a 9-7 win in the first game. In game two, she entered with the bases loaded and one out in the top of the seventh to notch the save in a 2-0 win in the second.
Game one saw the Griffins pound out 16 hits with six players recording two or more hits in the win.
Jessica Behr,
Becki Christoffers, and
Kim Machalette each had two hits and a pair of RBI's.
Gwynedd struck early, plating three runs in their first at-bat. Behr started the scoring with an RBI triple to score Morales. After a walk to
MaryKate Ballerino, Machalette would bring them home with a two-run, two-out single.
The Cyclones countered with two unearned runs in the second on just one hit. In the fourth, Carolyn Clites doubled home a run and would later score on a triple as part of a three-run frame for a 5-3 lead. But the Griffins got right up off the canvas in the bottom half to score four runs on seven hits to reclaim the lead for good.
Morales would get out of a bases loaded jam in the seventh with a foul out to first to wrap up game one. She would strikeout two and walk three, while scattering nine hits.
In game two, GMercyU crossed a run in the third and another in the fourth and rode the arm of Machalette as she notched her first shutout, yielding nine hits and two walks. She would get a key double play in the sixth to escape a potential trouble spot. With runners at first and second, a sharp one-hopper from Kylie Morgan was snagged at third by
Amanda Wortham, who was able tag third and fire across to first to end the frame.
Behr would make it 1-0 with her two-out RBI single in the third.
Nikki Canfield made it 2-0 in the fourth when she scored on a passed ball.
In the final inning, a walk and back-to-back singles would put Cyclones on every base. Morales would come on and get a force out at home before another defensive marvel helped the Griffins to the win. Morgan would send a hard grounder back at Morales' leg which caromed right to Christoffers at short and her throw to first was in time.
Gwynedd, winners of seven of their last eight, welcome Cabrini tomorow in a CSAC twinbill starting at 3 p.m.
