Widener Takes Two From Griffins

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Visiting Widener took two games of a doubleheader on Wednesday over the Griffins, taking game one 16-5, and the nightcap, 8-6.

Game one was one Gwynedd would like to forget defensively, as the team committed nine errors, the most errors in a game since a loss to Alvernia on April 8th, 2010.

GMercyU (9-5) would score twice in the second, on an RBI single from Tara Matteo and a double from Kim Machalette to take an early lead.

The Pride took advantage of five Griffin errors in the third to score five times on just two hits but the Griffins cut into that lead with two in the bottom half. After a one-out walk to Alyssa Morales, she would score all the way from first on a hard single from Jessica Behr to center that got by Widener's Katie Sterling and rolled all the way to the fence. Behr would trot home on the next batter, MaryKate Ballerino who tripled her home.

Two more errors in the fourth led to two more Widener runs and a 7-4 lead. In the fifth, with two on and two out, Sterling made up for her gaffe by snagging a liner off the bat of Morales to end the inning.

After an RBI double from Nikki Canfield in the fifth to make it a two-run game, Widener opened the game up in the sixth, scoring nine times on nine hits to help put the contest out of reach.

Ballerino, Canfield, and Machalette each had two hits and an RBI apiece. Morales surrendered 12 hits with just three earned runs to take the loss.

Alie Alkins was 3-for-5 with two RBI's and a run scored for the Pride.

In game two, both teams battled the impending darkness as the game was called after the sixth. Alkins would single home a run and Sterling homered in the top of the first to give Widener a quick 2-0 advantage. The Griffins would counter that with a four-spot in the bottom half and look for more. Matteo's two-run single keyed the frame and helped chase out starter Lindsey Manera. With runners on the corners with one-out, new pitcher Katie Rabuck got Machalette to line out to second, where Bree VanReenen fired over to third to just barely get Ballerino for the double play.

Alkins would triple home a run and later score as part of a three-run third. Two more runs would come home in the fourth for a 7-4 lead.

Gwynedd got two runs back on the bottom half of the fourth on two-out RBI singles from Becki Christoffers and Morales.

Widener (15-3) would add a run in the top of the sixth which would come in handy for the Griffins final at-bat. A lead-off single from Machalette and ensuing sacrifice to second would put the tying run at the plate. Rabuck would end the Griffins' chances with back-to-back strikeouts to close out the sweep.

Christoffers would go 2-for-4 with a run and RBI while Matteo was 2-for-3 with two RBI's and a run scored. Machalette pitched four innings, giving up seven runs on 12 hits.

Alkins was a thorn again, going 3-for-4 with three RBI's and two runs. Ally Horvath was 2-for-4 with three stolen bases. Rabuck got the win in relief, striking out seven in 5.2 innings of work.

The Griffins will get back at it on Friday when they open up CSAC play as Marywood visits Gwynedd Valley for a 3 p.m. start. With inclement weather predicted, stay tuned to www.gwyneddathletics.com and our social media for updates.
