WASHINGTON -- Gwynedd Mercy would drop game one but rebound with a strong performance in the second game to salvage a split at Catholic on Thursday.
The Griffins were held to one hit in game one as the Cardinals won it, 8-0. CUA had five hits and took advantage of five Gwynedd errors in the first to take a 5-0 lead.
Becki Christoffers would reach in the fourth on a lead-off error but get stranded at second.
Amanda Hesson would break up the no-hit bid in the fifth with her single to right.
Alyssa Morales took the loss, giving up four earned runs nine hits with no walks and four strikeouts.
Game 2 saw Gwynedd's
Kim Machalette toss a gem, scattering just three hits with two walks and two strikeouts in the 3-0 win.
The Griffins would score all three runs in the fourth. Morales would reach on a lead-off walk, then score on a double from
Jessica Behr. After
MaryKate Ballerino was a hit by pitch to put runners at first and second with no outs,
Nikki Canfield doubled to plate Behr. Ballerino would score on a sac fly from Hesson for the 3-0 lead.
After getting out of a big jam in the second, Machalette allowed just four baserunners the rest of the way. In that second, the Cardinals would load the bases with one out. Machalette worked her way out with a strikeout looking and groundout to end the threat.
Gwynedd Mercy will host Widener on Monday in a non-conference twinbill starting at 3 p.m.
