GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Rutgers-Camden spoiled Gwynedd Mercy's season opener by defeating the Griffins, 19-11, Thursday afternoon.

Sophomore Lauren Mitros led GMercyU with three goals and two assists and senior Danae Perrymond added three scores and an assist but the Griffins were held to just four goals in the second half.

Krystal Valianti led the Scarlet Raptors with a game-high five goals while teammate Cecilia Gross and Jessica Mayer each added four.

Gwynedd didn't get off to a good start, falling behind 4-1 just 12 minutes into the contest. Over the next 10 minutes, goals from Mitros, Brianna Greer and two from Carrie Kilgore would pull the Griffins within one, 6-5, at the 8:11 mark of the first, forcing a timeout from Rutgers-Camden.

Vallianti and Nicole Martin would net the next two for R-C before Mitros and Perrymond countered with one each, the last coming with 1:48 in the half. Breanna Heifet would score right after the ensuing draw with just over a minute to go to stake Rutgers to a 9-7 lead at the break.

Three-straight goals over the first 2:11 of the second from the Scarlet Raptors put Gwynedd in a five-goal deficit. After Greer would net her second on the day at the 23:39 mark, Rutgers would tally the next four to bump their lead to 16-8 with eight minutes remaining.

Perrymond and Kerri Flanagan would score just under two minutes apart to get within six, but the Griffins could pull no closer.

Bria Gillard made seven saves for Gwynedd while Alexa Rocks had six.

The Griffins return to action on Tuesday, March 15th when they open CSAC play against Marywood here in a 4 p.m. start.
