WILKES-BARRE, PA. --
Arron Goodman and
Courtney Cubbage were both named to the all-tournament team of the FNCB Monarch Classic, but it was #23 Susquehanna who defeated the Griffins, 80-74, in a very close championship game on Saturday.
Goodman registered 21 points and 10 rebounds, both game highs, for his second double-double on the season while Cubbage had 11 points and five boards. GMercyU (5-2) would lead by as much as 11 in the first half and hold a 38-33 advantage at halftime, but the River Hawks shot over 60% in the second half and take the lead for good with just over eight minutes to go in the game.
Ryan Traub and Steven Weidlich each netted 18 points for Susquehanna (7-1).
Gwynedd would jump out to a 14-4 lead and go up, 21-10, for their largest margin after a three-point play from Goodman. King's would chip away at the deficit before a three-pointer from
Manny Lopez with 7:08 in the half restored a 10-point edge (27-17). The River Hawks would then respond with an 11-3 run over the next three-plus minutes to get it to 30-28 on two free throws from Weidlich.
Rip Engel's two triples sandwiched a bucket from Cubbage and suddenly the Griffins were back up 38-28 with 1:40 in the stanza. SU would score the next five points for a 38-33 score at the half.
Susquehanna would open the second half on an 8-0 run before a layup from Goodman and another three from Engel would give the lead back to Gwynedd, 43-41.
Matt Sommers would connect on three of his career-high five three pointers in the second. He would break a 43-43 with his first longball at the 15:19 mark and with his second, helped GM take a 59-58 score with 9:30 left.
The Griffins could get no closer than two points on three occasions the rest of the way. Sommers would hit his third trey of the half with 1:46 left for a 75-73 SU score, but the River Hawks were able to go 5-for-6 at the free throw line to stall Gwynedd.
For the game, Sommers would finish with a career-high 15 points as Engel would also hit double digits with 14 points. The duo combined to hit nine of the team's 10 three-pointers on the day. As a team, GMercyU was 27-of-66 (40%) from the floor and 10-of-14 (71%) at the free throw line.
Gwynedd Mercy is off until next Saturday when they head to Washington, D.C. to face Gallaudet.
