Griffins Score CSAC Win Over Marywood In Home Opener

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy used a 16-2 run midway in the second half to pull away from Marywood, 78-64, Tuesday night in both team's CSAC opener.

Rip Engel led the Griffins (2-0, 1-0 CSAC) with a game-high 22 points on 7-of-11 shooting while Cedric Elleby added 16 points, 11 rebounds, and tied a career-high with six block. Arron Goodman kicked in 13 points and eight boards as GMercyU shot 50.0% in the second to open up a sizable advantage.

Dexter Shy had 16 points for the Pacers (0-3, 0-1 CSAC) with Tip Swartz scoring 11 and Connor Shroyer chipping in 10.

Swartz's three-pointer early in the first put Marywood up, 7-3, but later Engel would draw a foul, making a tough driving layup. His free throw and one of two from Elleby at the line would tie the score. The Pacers took their largest lead of the half at 13-7 after Swartz's field goal.

Engel gave Gwynedd its first lead (20-17) since early in the contest with his triple with 8:22 before halftime. Dexter Shy would counter with a three-ball of his own to knot it up at 23-23. From there, the Griffins went on an 18-5 run to open up a 13-point lead, their largest of the stanza (41-28). Marywood would score the next six points to pull within 41-34 at halftime. For the period, Gwynedd shot just 37.8% but made26 trips to the free throw line.

In the second, the Griffins never relinquished the lead. Marywood got it as close as 46-41 after Shroyer's three-point play. But Gwynedd was just too tough as Goodman would put back his own miss and later Manny Lopez would hit his free throw after his made jumper and lead would climb back to double digits.

Elleby's field goal in the paint with 10:05 remaining would jumpstart a scoring run over the next four minutes to help put the game out of reach. Rich Dunham's pickpocket steal and ensuing layup gave Gwynedd its largest lead of the game (77-54) with just over five to play.

The Griffins held a 44-36 rebound edge led by Elleby. Larry Jones III added six caroms as well. The team would take 12 Marywood turnovers and convert them to 18 points. Engel hit three of the team's six three-pointers on the evening.
