Griffins begin playoffs on Monday

CSAC WOMEN'S SOCCER TOURNAMENT PAGE

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- The Griffin Women's Soccer Team travels to Immaculata tonight to open up the 2016 Colonial States Athletic Conference Tournament.

GMercyU (9-6-2, 7-4 CSAC) punched their ticket with a pair of wins last week to close out the regular season. The Griffins earned a berth with a 3-0 win over Cairn on Tuesday and secured the #5 seed with a dramatic 1-0 double overtime victory over Cabrini on Thursday on Senior Night. The Mighty Macs (7-10, 7-4 CSAC) locked in the #4 seed via their 1-0 victory over Cedar Crest on Thursday as well. With similar 7-4 conference records, IU earns the tiebreaker with their 1-0 win against Gwynedd on October 19th.

The Griffins will look to their defense on Monday night to advance to the semifinals. Gwynedd has only allowed six goals in 11 conference games. Sophomore goalie Kailey Hopkins an All-CSAC Second-Team selection led the CSAC in total saves with 79 with a .929 save percentage also posting a conference best six shutouts in league play this year as well.

On the offensive side of the pitch, the Griffins will look to three-time All-CSAC selection Meghan Petroski. She finished fifth in total points with 17 in league play this year with six goals and five assists. Overall she posted 25 points with nine goals and seven assists. Joining Petroski on the All-CSAC Second-Team is Anna Numerato (2 goals, 2 assists) and Grace Macnamara (5 assists).

The Mighty Macs boast the CSAC Rookie of the Year defender Maddie Bescript, second-team selection Carrie Quigley (6 goals, 5 assists) and honorable metion selection Carly Mirarchi (6 goals, 2 assists).

This is the third meeting of the teams in the CSAC Playoffs. Both teams have split playoff wins with the Griffins winning 2-0 in 2009 and the Mighty Macs returning the favor in 2010 with a 1-0 victory.

#3 Centenary will host #6 seed Neumann in the other first round action on Monday. Monday's winners will travel to #1 Marywood and #2 Cabrini on Wednesday in the semifinals. The semifinal winners will meet Saturday in the Championship at 1 p.m. at the highest remaining seed.
