IMMACULATA, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy had some tricks up their sleeve in as the fifth-seeded Griffins took down fourth-seeded Immaculata, 2-0, in a first-round game of the 2016 Colonial States Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Tournament on Halloween night.
Rookie
Samantha Brown scored both goals in the first half and goalie
Kailey Hopkins recorded her ninth shutout of the season, making 11 saves as GMercyU (10-6-2) will move on to the semifinal round, where they'll play at top-seeded Marywood on Wednesday.
Brown opened the scoring in just the 17th minute, as she was able to finish a pass from
Meghan Petroski as she cut through the IU defense. For Petroski, it was her team-leading eighth assist on the year.
It became 2-0 in the 34th minute, as Brown notched her fifth tally on the season on an assist from
Madeline Swartley. Both teams would register five shots apiece in the first 45 minutes as the Griffins held a two-goal lead.
Hopkins and the Griffin Defense would rise the occasion in the second stanza, as the Mighty Macs (7-11) fired off 10 shots in the stanza. Hopkins etched seven of her 11 stops on the evening to help preserve the clean sheet.
Gwynedd and Marywood will meet for the fifth time in the postseason and fourth time in the semifinal round, with the Griffins winning the last two matchups.
