GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- The Gwynedd Mercy University Field Hockey team closed out the regular season with a 7-0 victory on Tuesday evening to finish their Colonial States Athletic Conference record at a perfect 7-0.
Kaitlyn Lutz recorded her first career hat trick scoring all three of her goals in the second half.
Abigail Gabriel added a score and two assists to also highlight the Griffin offense on the evening.
Erika Cimino put the Griffins (12-5) up 1-0 just under two minutes into the game when she found the back of the cage with her second goal of the year.
Shannon Carroll made it 2-0 when she played a deflection on goal assisted by Gabriel.
Gabriel would strike in the 37th minute adding to the lead when she connected on a hard shot from the top of the crease. Lutz scored her first of the night at the 46th minute followed by a goal from
Brianna O'Connell in the 61st minute.
Lutz would then score the last two Griffin goals in the 64th and 65th minutes. The first off of a corner play assisted by
Maggie Walsh, and the second when she played a ball from the middle of the crease.
The goalie duo of
Samantha Soscia and
Sarah Crane recorded the fourth Griffin shutout of the year and third in the last four games. Emma Ryan made 11 saves for the Falcons (4-10, 1-6 CSAC).
This is the third time in program history that the Griffins have finished the regular season undefeated in league play. With their record the team has earned the top seed for next week's conference tournament for the second year in a row.
GMercyU will return back to action on Wednesday, November 2nd when they will host an opponent to be determined in a semifinal matchup.
