LAPLUME, PA. --
Kaitlyn Lutz scored with 13:43 left in the contest to help lift Gwynedd Mercy to a 2-1 CSAC win at Keystone on a rainy Saturday. With the win, the Griffins (11-5, 6-0 CSAC) clinch the top seed in the conference tournament and home-field advantage.
The goal was Lutz's sixth on the season, but more importantly her first career game-winning goal.
The Griffins would be in control early on, totaling seven shots and three penalty corners, but it would be the Giants striking first, at the 13:08 mark on a goal from Breanna Paulson. The offensive pressure continued in the half and would pay off as
Melissa Russo added to her goal total with her 22ndd on the year off an assist from
Abigail Gabriel with 5:34 left in the stanza.
Keystone goalie Emily Hawkins helped keep the Giants in the contest as she made 11 of her 20 saves in the second half. But the Griffins would break through on Lutz's eventual game winner.
Erika Cimino would pick up the assist.
Gwynedd outshot the Giants, 29-3, and produced 11 penalty corners.
The team will close out the regular season on Tuesday when they host Cedar Crest in a 7 p.m. start. The CSAC Tournament will kick off on Wednesday, November 2nd with the Griffins hosting a home game. Opponent and time to be determined.
