GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- The Gwynedd Mercy University Men's Soccer team beat the Giants of Keystone College 1-0 in a physical CSAC opener on Saturday afternoon.
With just 29 seconds left in the first, senior
Seth Lindner (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) found junior
Brandon Rodriguez (Eden, Md./Parkside) across the box for the first and only goal of the game. It was his third career goal and his first game-winner.
Although they were leading 1-0 at the break, the Giants outshot the Griffins, 7-4, in the first and had a slight advantage in corner kicks at 3-1.
In a strong second period, Gwynedd (2-7, 1-0 CSAC) outshot Keystone, 5-3, and lead in corners 2-1. The two teams also registered 10 fouls apiece in the second stanza. Senior goalkeeper
Matt Chilcote (Carlisle, Pa./Cumberland Valley) and the Griffin defense, who yielded just three second-half shot, kept the Giants (3-4-1, 0-1 CSAC) off the board for their first home CSAC shutout since a 3-0 win over Immaculata on October 29th, 2003.
Chilcote and Keystone's Adam Zbiciak both made five saves in net for the day.
The Griffins are back in action on Monday at 4 p.m. when they take on Penn State-Brandywine at home.
