GLENSIDE, PA. -- A four-goal spurt in an 11-minute span in the second half helped propel Gwynedd Mercy to its fourth-straight victory as the Griffins downed Arcadia, 5-3, Tuesday night.
Seniors
Stephanie Bacho (Cinnaminson, N.J./Holy Cross) and
Sarah Yerk (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) netted two goals each while
Katie O'Neill (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) added a pair of helpers in the win.
Trailing 1-0 at the break and posting just two first-half shots, Gwynedd (4-2) would get on the board as Yerk potted her two goals in less than a minute, tipping in two drives from inside the arc. Bacho made it 3-1 in the 52nd minute and sophomore
Melissa Russo (Saylorsburg, Pa./Pleasant Valley) added the prettiest goal of the night less than three minutes later for a 4-1 edge to chase out Arcadia goalie Brittany Hodson.
The Knights would look to climb back in it, getting two scores from Rachel Longnecker, the last coming with 5:22 to play to make it a one-goal game.
Bacho would add her second tally of the night, a timely insurance goal, minutes later to give the Griffins some breathing room.
GM would total six shots in the second while Arcadia had nine of its 13 shots as well. Hodson allowed four goals with zero saves. Sophomore
Samantha Soscia (Lambertville, N.J./South Hunterdon) would record four stops in the win.
The Griffins will travel to nationally-ranked Montclair State on Saturday in another non-conference tilt. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
