MONTCLAIR, N.J. -- Gwynedd Mercy had their four-game win streak come to an end as #8 Montclair State scored four times in the second half to break a 1-1 halftime tie to go on and defeat the Griffins, 5-2.
Senior
Stephanie Bacho (Cinnaminson, N.J./Holy Cross) would put the Griffins (4-3) on the board early as she connected on a penalty corner off an assist from
Megan Senkeleski (Little Silver, N.J./Red Bank) just 3:16 into the game. The Red Hawks evened things at 1-1 at the 17:24 mark and that's where it stood after the first 35 minutes of play. Despite being outshot, 12-3, in that first stanza, sophomore goalie
Samantha Soscia (Lambertville, N.J./South Hunterdon) kept the Griffins in the contest as she made 11 stops.
After two goals from Montclair's Kailey Dalgauer to take a 3-1 lead, MSU was awarded a penalty stroke and a chance to go up by three, but Soscia made the stop on Alex Constantine. The Griffins' fortunes later reversed as they were given a penalty stroke with 16:19 to go. Senior
Katie O'Neill (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) would put it away and suddenly it was a one-goal contest.
The Red Hawks however would convert on another penalty stroke at the 13:36 mark and with less than two minutes later, score again to make it 5-2.
Soscia would finish with 15 saves, a career-high. MSU keeper Rebecca Brattole totaled four.
Gwynedd will look to start a new win streak but it will not be easy when they visit top-ranked College of New Jersey on Thursday.
