GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Sophomore
Melissa Russo (Saylorsburg, Pa./Pleasant Valley) netted two second-half goals as the Griffins were able to knock off Widener, 2-1, Wednesday evening.
Another strong defensive effort limited the Pride, who suffered their first loss of the season, to just six shots while Gwynedd totaled 16 and would hold a 16-5 edge in penalty corners, 11 of which came in the second half. In that second stanza, GM would put together 11 shots and would finally get on the board at 46:31 mark when Russo would dribble in from the right side, attempting to send a centering pass. Widener goalie Mikayla Ninos tried to come out and intercept the crossing pass but it would deflect off her leg pad and into the net.
Gwynedd would make it 2-0 with less than four minutes remaining as the team converted on one of its corners. A blast from the top of the circle from senior
Megan Senkeleski (Little Silver, N.J./Red Bank) was kept out of the cage by a defensive save, but the rebound came right to Russo where she added her third tally of the season.
The defense was seconds away from their second-straight shutout, but Widener (3-1) was able to get one past sophomore goalie
Samantha Soscia (Lambertville, N.J./South Hunterdon) with no time remaining on a score from Alyssa Buckley.
Soscia would record two saves on the night while Ninos made eight.
The Griffins (2-2) resume action on Saturday when they travel to Stockton in another non-conference matchup starting at 1 p.m.
