Griffins and Mules Deadlocked After Late GM Goal

The Gwyynedd Mercy University Women's Soccer team ended their game against Mulenberg College in a draw, 1-1, on Saturday afternoon.  Prior to kick off the Griffins honored the PA Rush 11 and under girls soccer team.  Players were accompanied by the Rush during starting lineups.

At 17:24 in the first, Muhllenberg's Phoebe Shields found Mackenzie O'Brien in the center of the box to put the Mules up 1-0.  Despite trading off shots for the majority of the half, the Griffins were unable to gain a clear offensive advantage.

Down 1-0 at the break, the Mules outshot the Griffins 8-3 with neither team having an advantage in penalty corners.  Following the lone goal of the half, the Mules offensive push would deny the Griffins a shot on goal for nearly 28 minutes.

Despite the Mules controlling the game offensively in the second half, the Griffins would not relent.  With just 24 seconds left on the clock, senior Diamond Devereaux (Oreland, Pa./Springfield (Montco)) would tie the game at 1-1 after firing a pass from Meghan Petroski (Philadelphia, Pa./Little Flower) into the back of the net.  The goal was Diamond's first goal of the season and second of her career.

The Griffins were outshot 17-5 in regulation with only 3 shots on goal.  The Mules also took the advantage in penalty corners at 6-2 before overtime play.

Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the 20 minutes of overtime play.  Deadlocked at 1-1, the Griffins were outshot 21-7 overall.

Senior goal keeper Jess Tadley (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) made 12  saves in net for the Griffins.  Jen Mermelstein closed out the day with 2 for the Mules.

The Griffins are back in action at home on Tuesday as they take on Washington College at 6 p.m.
