Women's Soccer Wows In Season Debut

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Junior Ariety Fellenz (Jackson, N.J./Jackson Liberty) netted a hat trick and sophomore Meghan Petroski (Philadelphia, Pa./Little Flower) added two goals and two assists as the Gwynedd Mercy Women's Soccer Team opened their 2015 campaign with a big 6-0 victory over John Jay Tuesday evening.

For Fellenz, it was her first career hat trick. She would also add an assist to give her a career-high seven points. Petroski also had a personal-best as her six points were a career high. Sophomore Jackie Pierson (Lansdale, Pa./Archbishop Wood) also scored for the Griffins (1-0), who opened up a 2-0 halftime lead into a runaway win.

Petroski opened the scoring in the 26th minute as she was able to take a long feed and split two defenders for a breakaway goal. Less than three minutes later, Fellenz knocked in the first of her three tallies as she put back a rebound from a Petroski shot off a corner kick. The first half saw GM hold a 14-1 shooting edge.

In the second, Pierson made it 3-0 when she got her foot on a centering pass from senior Megan Gifford (North Wales, Pa./Lansdale Catholic) in the 54th minute. Just over two minutes would go by before Petroski had the prettiest goal of the night as she would flick in a ball in the middle from Fellenz through traffic in the box.

Andrea Antoni would record seven saves in goal in the first half for the Bloodhounds (0-1). Senior netminder Jess Tadley (Cherry Hill, N.J./Cherry Hill West) would make just one stop before giving way to freshman keeper Kailey Hopkins (Warminster, Pa./William Tennent) midway in the second half.

The Griffins get back at it this weekend as they head up the Northeast Extension when they take on Lycoming on Saturday and Penn College of Technology on Sunday.
