BOX SCORE Game 2RADNOR, PA. -- Cabrini snapped Gwynedd Mercy's win streak as the Griffins lost the first game of a CSAC Doubleheader, 6-0, om April 7th. Game two was completed on Wednesday, April 15th after rain suspended action after the first game with the Cavaliers posting a 6-5 win.
In the first game, GMercyU fell behind 3-0 after the first thanks to a three-run home run from Steph Diegel. After a two-run single in the third from Amber Dietrich, the Griffins (12-5, 7-2 CSAC) looked to put something together in the fourth, as junior
MaryKate Ballerino (Hatboro, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) and sophomore
Nikki Canfield (Souderton, Pa./Souderton) led off the inning with back-to-back singles. However, Cabrini's Kiley Sharp was able escape the inning, getting two groundouts and a strikeout.
Starter
Michele Arechavala (Mt. Ephraim, N.J./Audubon) worked out of a bases loaded spot with just one out in the bottom half to help keep the team in the contest. The freshman allowed five earned runs on 12 hits and two walks.
Sharp scattered eight hits while striking out five for the Cavaliers (12-5, 8-1 CSAC).
Jennifer Whalen (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) and Canfield each went 2-for-3.
When action resumed with the bases loaded in the third and just one out, the Griffins faced a new pitcher who induced a pop up and groundout to get out of the inning.
After the Cavaliers made it 5-3 off a solo homer from Diegel in the bottom of the third, Ballerino would groundout to second to score
Jessica Mower (Hatfield, Pa./North Penn) to get that run back.
Again, Cabrini looked to add an insurance run in the sixth, taking advantage of a Griffin error to later score an unearned run on an RBI single to up the lead to 6-4. Gwynedd would look to rally in their final at bat and had some good chances, as Canfield blasted a solo home run to cut the deficit to one run.
Amanda Hesson (Levittown, Pa./Neshaminy) would follow with a base hit to right, but she would later be gunned down trying to steal second.
Ashley Zavatsky (Philadelphia, Pa./Little Flower) would reach on a two-out walk, but the Cavs were able to end it on a strikeout.
Canfield would finish 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI's and a stolen base.
Whalen took the loss, as she gave up six runs (two earned) on nine hits with three walks and two strikeouts.
The Griffins (16-6, 11-3 CSAC) plays at Neumann on Friday and Centenary on Saturday.
