BOX SCORE Game 2GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy made it seven wins in a row after sweeping Baptist Bible Monday afternoon. The Griffins took the first game, 11-0, and the second, 9-5.
Junior
MaryKate Ballerino (Hatboro, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) had quite a day at the plate, going 4-for-7 with five runs, four RBI's, three stolen bases, two triples, and a double on the day.
In game one, the Griffins (12-4, 7-1 CSAC) had just six hits, but took advantage three Defender errors and 11 wild pitches, four of which led to runs.
Ballerino's RBI triple was part of a three-run first but it was the fourth where the game broke open. Gwynedd would go on and plate eight runs, all with two outs on three hits and three Baptist Bible errors. Ballerino would strike again as her two-run double scored juniors
Megan Kelly (Ivyland, Pa./Little Flower) and
Jessica Mower (Hatfield, Pa./North Penn).
It was more than enough for starter
Jennifer Whalen (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) as the senior allowed just three hits with five K's and two walks. Her only threat was in the first when she worked out of a bases loaded jam.
Ballerino finished 2-for-3 with 3 RBI's. She along with Whalen, Mower and sophomore
Nikki Canfield (Souderton, Pa./Souderton) all scored two runs each.
Game two looked to mirror the first, as the Griffins got runs across in the second and third and would later use a five spot in the fourth to build an 8-0 lead. Baptist Bible (1-11, 0-6 CSAC) answered with a five spot of their own in the fifth as Lauren Shepherd's bases loaded triple was part of the scoring.
Leading 8-5, the Griffins added an insurance run in the sixth when Canfield tripled home Ballerio.
Canfield finished with two RBI triples and a walk while Ballerino was 2-for-4 with three runs, three stolen bases (tying a career-high) and a triple of her own. Whalen added her own triple as she collected two hits. On the mound, Whalen yielded three earned runs on eight hits, with five strikeouts and just one walk.
The team will travel to Cabrini tomorrow for another CSAC Doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
