true Gwynedd Mercy 14, Centenary 8
2015 CSAC Tournament First Round
BOX SCOREHACKETTSTOWN, N.J. -- The Griffins scored early and often to go on and take out third-seeded Centenary, 14-8, in a first-round game of the CSAC Tournament.
Sixth-seeded Gwynedd Mercy moves on to the double elimination round this weekend at Neumann. The Griffins will take on second-seeded Cabrini on Friday at 10 a.m. With a win, they'll play at 4 p.m. in a winner's bracket game. A loss sends them to an elimination game at 2 p.m.
GMercyU used a six-run first and four-run second to go up 10-0 after their first two at-bats. Freshman
Jessica Behr (Philadlephia, Pa./MaST Charter) sparked the early barrage with a grand slam in the first along with a two-run single from junior
Megan Kelly (Ivyland, Pa./Little Flower). Kelly would strike again in the next inning with her first career home run, a three-run shot, as part of a four-run frame.
The Cyclones would get on the board in the second with a three-spot. The third was quiet for both teams until the fourth when the Griffins scored three times, using a wild pitch and two infield RBI singles. After a Centenary run in the bottom half and two more in the fifth, Gwynedd Mercy added a run in the seventh to lead 14-6.
Starter
Jennifer Whalen (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) looked to nail down her 19th complete game in the last half of the seventh as the Cyclones did not go quietly. Kylie Morgan's two-run triple made it 14-8 but that would be it as the Griffins move on in the playoffs.
Kelly finished 3-for-5 with three runs and a career-high five RBIs. Whalen was 4-for-5 with two doubles and an RBI while
MaryKate Ballerino (Hatboro, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) was 2-for-5 with three runs scored and a stolen base.
Erin Walsh scored three runs, going 2-for-3 for the Cyclones (19-20).
