BOX SCORE Game 2PHOTO GALLERYGWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Catholic took a pair of games from Gwynedd Mercy on a chilly Thursday, spoiling the Griffins' Senior Day. The Cardinals took game one, 10-2, and a 6-3 shortened win in game two.
The team and coaching staff honored
Jennifer Whalen (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) and
Ashley Zavatsky (Philadelphia, Pa./Little Flower), its two seniors along with their parents prior to the games.
The Griffins (16-12) could not stop Catholic's Amy Laughner in game one, as she was 5-for-5 with three doubles, and triple and five RBI's.
After Gwynedd left runners at second and third in the first, the Cardinals scored twice in the second for a 2-0 lead. GMercyU answered in the bottom half when
Amanda Hesson (Levittown, Pa./Neshaminy), who led off with single and then stole second, scored off an error on a bloop single to left from Zavatsky. Making sure the ball fell safely, Hesson would get a late jump for third, but the throw from left field went out of play, allowing the Griffins their first run. Zavatsky would go all the way to third on the play. The next batter,
Tara Matteo (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) walked to put runners on the corners. Matteo would try to steal second, but the throw was in time, which also allowed Zavatsky to come home and tie things at 2-2.
Laughner hit her first of her three doubles in the third to score a run, but as she tried to stretch it to third, was thrown out in a nice play from Matteo to
Megan Kelly (Ivyland, Pa./Little Flower) to
MaryKate Ballerino (Hatboro, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham).
Trailing 5-2 going into the sixth, Catholic (15-13) roughed up Whalen, scoring four times, two from a double from Laughner and two on a bases loaded single from Alyssa Keane.
Whalen was charged with all 10 runs on 13 hits as she also gave up a season-high seven walks. Hesson and Zavatsky each finished 2-for-3 with a run scored.
In game two, things were scoreless until the fourth when CUA plated four runs on five hits and two Griffin errors. Gwynedd would cut the lead to one in the bottom half, taking advantage of five walks, two with the bases loaded and just one hit to score three times.
With darkness looming, the Cardinals tacked on two more runs in the fifth. Down to their final at-bat in the bottom of the frame, the Griffins managed one baserunner before a strikeout would end it.
Ballerino and
Nikki Canfield (Souderton, Pa./Souderton) were each 1-for-2 with a run scored.
Michele Arechavala (Mt. Ephraim, N.J./Audubon) took the loss, allowing six runs (four earned) on 10 hits.
The Griffins get back to conference action tomorrow when they host Immaculata at 3 p.m. in a rescheduled DH from Tuesday.
