NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- The Gwynedd Mercy Softball team traveled South over their Spring Break, to the Fastpitch Dreams Classic in North Myrtle Beach and came home with five wins in their eight games.
After going 3-1 in their first four contests, the Griffins split in their last four games over the final two days.
Gwynedd Mercy 6, Regis 3 | BOX SCOREIn Wednesday's first game of the day, Gwynedd had 11 hits while
Megan Kelly (Ivyland, Pa./Little Flower),
Jessica Mower (Hatfield, Pa./North Penn), and
Nikki Canfield (Souderton, Pa./Souderton) each went 2-for-4. Mower added two RBI's while Kelly and Canfield scored a run.
Up 3-1 going into the third, Gwynedd only had minimal damage from a bases-loaded, no-out situation with just one run. The defense was able to get three force outs at home to end the threat.
RBI singles in the fourth from Mower and one in the fifth from
Tara Matteo (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) helped to add to the lead. After Regis crossed a run in the seventh, starter
Michele Arechavala (Mt. Ephraim, N.J./Audubon) got out of another jam with two on and two out, getting a forceout at third to end it.
King's 13, Gwynedd Mercy 2 | BOX SCOREThe second game of the day got away in the middle innings as King's plated seven runs in a decisive fourth. Gwynedd would go up 2-0 in the second as Matteo drove in a pair of runs with a single to left with two outs. The Monarchs answered with two of their own in the bottom of the frame. After a four-spot, in the next frame, King's opened it up in the fifth, scoring seven runs on six hits.
Gwynedd Mercy 8, Anna Maria 0 | BOX SCOREThursday got off to a good start with as
Jennifer Whalen (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) bounced back from the rough outing vs. King's by scattering four hits with just one walk and two strikeouts in six innings. Up 4-0 heading into the sixth, the Griffins scored four and would use a two-run walk-off single from
Amanda Hesson (Levittown, Pa./Neshaminy).
MaryKate Ballerino (Hatboro, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) led the charge, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI's. Whalen would walk twice and score twice.
West Virginia State 1, Gwynedd Mercy 0 | BOX SCOREMother Nature had its say in a close game against Division II West Virginia State. Gwynedd was hanging in a one-run contest before a sudden blast of rain forced the game to be called in the fifth.
Arechavala allowed just one run on three hits, with three K's and a walk.
Jessica Behr (Philadelphia, Pa./MaST Charter) had the team's only hit in the game.
For the trip, Canfield batted .455 (10-for-22) with three doubles, four RBI's, three walks, six runs scored and a .591 slugging percentage. Ballerino wasn't far behind, going .440 (11-for-25) with six RBI's and four stolen bases.
The Griffins (5-3) will look to keep things going when they play at Arcadia on Friday in a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
