BOX SCORE Game 2SCRANTON, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy was back in action for the first time in 24 days, splitting a Colonial States Athletic Conference Doubleheader at Marywood on Sunday, falling 5-3 in game one, but rebounding for an 8-3 win in game two.
In game one, Gwynedd fell behind 5-1 early, but had some chances to rally only to come up short. Junior
Megan Kelly (Ivyland, Pa./Little Flower) had three hits while senior
Jennifer Whalen (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan) scored twice.
After plating a run in the first, the Pacers answered with three in the bottom of the frame, along with runs in the second and third. The Griffins would get runners on second and third with one out in the fouth, but a popup and groundout ended the threat.
Gwynedd would score a run off an error in the fifth and in the seventh, a bases loaded walk would pull GMercyU within three. Still with the bags full, Marywood was able to win it, getting a called third strike.
In game two, it was the Griffins getting off to a good start, with two in the first and three in the fourth.
Kelly's RBI groundout and
Nikki Canfield (Souderton, Pa./Souderton) added a run-scoring triple in the first. Freshman
Jessica Behr (Philadelphia, Pa./MaST Charter) would later deliver a big two-run triple in the fourth. Behr would come home on an RBI single from Whalen, and it was 5-0.
The Pacers rallied to pull within 5-3, but the Griffins tacked on two runs in the seventh on just one hit and an error for some breathing room.
Whalen would go 3-for-5 with an RBI, run, and stolen base while freshman
Tara Matteo (Springfield, Pa./Springfield) added three hits and an RBI.
Gwynedd Mercy (6-4, 1-1 CSAC) is right back at it tomorrow when they host Keystone in their home opener starting at 3 p.m.
