GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- The Gwynedd Mercy University Field Hockey will have a chance to defend their title as the Griffins advance to the Colonial States Athletic Conference Championship Game for the sixth consecutive year after defeating the #4 seeded Giants of Keystone, 5-0, on Wednesday evening.
Senior
Megan Senkeleski scored twice while
Katie O'Neill and freshman
Maggie Walsh added a goal and an assist each as GM won their fourth game in a row.
Another strong offensive start found Gwynedd (13-5) up early in the first. Walsh put the Griffins up 1-0 at 25:49 following a penalty corner. Not long after O'Neill, who earlier in the day was named 2015 CSAC Defensive Player of the Year, would connect with Senkeleski to go up 2-0 with 18:55 left in the first.
Controlling the game offensively, the Griffins did not allow the Giants any offensive opportunities outshooting them 17-0 in the first. Entering the break, up 2-0, GM also had a clear advantage in penalty corners at 6-0.
Pushing the tempo, the Griffins fired off 13 shots in the second.Â
Melissa Russo, Senkeleski and O'Neill would each tally a goal in the second half of play.Â
Stephanie Bacho and
Shannon Carroll would each record one assist in the 5-0 victory.
Samantha Soscia would record her seventh shutout of the year on two saves and the second against the Giants this season. goalkeeper Amy Denmon made 14 stops for Giants (5-11) as they bowed out of the CSAC tournament.
