Griffins Upended By Cabrini In CSAC Championship

2015 CSAC Field Hockey Championship

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Cabrini unseated Gwynedd Mercy as the CSAC Champions as the Cavaliers held on for a 2-1 win over the Griffins in the title game Saturday afternoon.

Gwynedd was looking for its fifth-straight crown and sixth overall, but a late rally came up a bit short.

Sophomore Melissa Russo scored the lone Griffin goal in the 53rd minute to cut a 2-0 lead. GM would apply the offensive pressure to look for the equalizer, which included three penalty corner attempts in the final 2:29 of the contest.

Cabrini goalie Taylor Bookman would make two key saves in that flurry to keep Gwynedd off the board.

The Cavaliers (12-8) made it 1-0 late in the first as Tiffany Phillips was able to get stick on a pass through the goal mouth past Griffin keeper Samantha Soscia. The first-half stats were nearly close as there was a 7-5 GM edge in shots and each team had five corners.

Early in the second, Gwynedd got a break when a shot from the right side from Cabrini's Kerry Anne Farrell hit the left post. With 25:38 remaining, the Cavaliers went up 2-0 when Jen Webb was able to deflect a hard pass up and over Soscia on a penalty corner.

Russo would net her 23rd tally of the season as she fought through traffic in front of the cage to put a stick on a pass from freshman Kaitlyn Lutz. It would set the stage for a tense remainder of the game. Cabrini thought they had a goal off a penalty corner with 8:01 left, but their shot attempt was outside the arc and was disallowed.

Bookman would be named Tournament MVP as she finished with eight saves on the day. Soscia recorded five in the loss.

Gwynedd Mercy finishes the season with a final record of 13-6. It would mark the final games for the team's four seniors: Katie O'Neill, Stephanie Bacho, Megan Senkeleski, and Amanda Martino. The four have combined for 55 wins and three CSAC Championships in their careers.
