GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy capped their regular season on a high note, as the Griffins took down visiting Delaware Valley, 3-1, Saturday afternoon.
Melissa Russo extended her nine-game point streak as the sophomore netted a pair of goals.
Brianna O'Connell also tallied as the Griffins (12-5) now turn their attention to next week's CSAC Tournament, where Gwynedd is the top seed and will host Keystone in a semifinal game on Wednesday.
O'Connell scored at the 24:49 mark of the first with a nice shot that got up and over goalie Emily Aldrige for a 1-0 lead.
It stayed that way into the second half, but GM upped the pressure, firing off 17 of their 24 shots in the stanza. Gwynedd also had 11 of their 18 penalty corners in the period.
Russo would net her first on the day as she converted on a corner off an assist from
Maggie Walsh in the 52nd minute. She would strike again nine minutes later, scoring her team-leading 21st goal on a feed from
Katie O'Neill.
Goalie
Samantha Soscia saw three shots and made two saves on the day. Aldrige would make 12 stops.
The Aggies (6-12) spoiled the shutout with less than eight minutes to go when Stefania Swider connected on a penalty stroke.
Wednesday's time will be announced on Monday. Check back to the Gwynedd Athletic Website and our social media outlets for the latest information.
