Neumann Downs Griffins, Cripple Playoff Chase

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy's playoff chase suffered a major blow with a 2-0 home defeat to Neumann on Saturday in CSAC action.

The Griffins (5-12-1, 2-4-1 CSAC) now sit in eighth place looking from the outside of the six-team playoff field. With two regular season games remaining, GM needs to win out and get some help along the way.

With just 3:15 elapsed in the first half, the Knights' Jake McDevitt made it 1-0 as a cross from the left side made its way through a bevy of players in the box to McDevitt who beat Griffin keeper Matt Chilcote.

McDevitt would set up the second goal in the 20th minute, as his corner kick found the head of Josh Hendrickson which got past Chilcote for a 2-0 lead. Gwynedd's best chance came late in the stanza as corner kick produced two looks in the box. Danny Saba's header off the corner was blocked by the defense with the rebound coming to Nick Stangler, but his shot was snuffed out by Shane Smith.

The play was tense throughout as a total of five yellow cards were issued in the first half with Neumann leading in shots, 9-4, and fouls, 9-3.

The shots were identical in the second for each team, 9-4.

Chilcote finished the day with eight saves while Smith totaled three.

Gwynedd Mercy plays their final home game of the regular season on Tuesday night when they host Centenary at 6 p.m. They'll close the year at Summit on Saturday.
