Griffins Honor Seniors, Shutout Keystone

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- The Gwynedd Mercy University Field Hockey team remains undefeated in conference play as they took down the Giants of Keystone College, 5-0, on Saturday afternoon on Senior Day.

Prior to the start, the Griffins (10-5, 6-0 CSAC) honored their four seniors: Stephanie Bacho, Megan Senkeleski, Amanda Martino, and Katie O'Neill. When asked about her senior class, Coach Lane stated "They have left their mark on our program. I am looking forward to what will happen in the next three weeks as they close out their careers."

The Griffins team chemistry was at an all-time high in the first, firing off 15 shots and did not allow the Giants to gain any offensive opportunities. Although they managed to keep control of the game offensively, GM was unable to find the back of the net in the first. Keystone goalkeeper Amy Denmon kept the Giants even at 0-0 going into the break.

Building on the first half momentum, senior O'Neill got the Griffins on the board five minutes into the second half with her ninth goal of the season. The Griffins would keep their foot on the gas, going on to net four more goals in the stanza. Both Melissa Russo and Abigail Gabriel would record two goals in the second half of play. Maggie Walsh and Brianna O'Connell tallied one assist apiece.

Sophomore goalkeeper Samantha Soscia recorded a shutout for the Griffins, her sixth on the year. Keystone keeper Amy Denmon made 23 saves in the cage for the Giants (4-9, 3-3 CSAC).

Overall the Griffins outshot the Giants 34-0. The Griffins also took a big advantage in penalty corners at 25-0.

The Griffins, who have clinched a playoff berth, are back in action on Wednesday as they close out conference play against Marywood University. Start time is set for 6 p.m. With a win, GM can clinch the #1 playoff seed and home field advantage throughout the postseason.
