GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Rhodes College snapped Gwynedd Mercy's five-game winning streak on Monday afternoon as a second-half rally came up short in a 3-2 physical non-conference matchup.
The Lynx would strike early and often in the first, entering the second stanza up 3-0, and leading in shots 11-3. Alex Friedman, Evy Royther and Mackenzie Busby all recorded one goal apiece in the half for Rhodes. Erin Best and Busby each tallied one assist.
The second saw the Griffins come alive, outshooting Rhodes, 8-1. With less than 13 minutes in the second, sophomore
Brianna O'Connell would get GM on the board with her 10th goal of the season, blasting a shot at the top of the arc off a pass from her fellow classmate
Melissa Russo. Russo would pull the Griffins within one with just under seven minutes left in regulation. However, their offensive surge would be too late to tie the game. Despite a penalty corner with under a minute to play, Gwynedd was unable to get a shot off.
The Lynx outshot the Griffins by a slight margin of 12-11 overall and took the advantage in penalty corners at 11-9.
Samantha Socia made six saves in the first for the Griffins and freshmen
Sarah Crane entered the second half to close out the game. Laura Eckelkamp made eight stops in the cage for the Lynx.
The Griffins are back in action on Saturday as they continue conference play against Keystone starting at 3 p.m. The team will host its Senior Day, honoring their senior class prior to the game.
