FREDERICK, MD. -- The Gwynedd Mercy Volleyball Team headed down to Hood College for a tri-match with Catholic and the host Blazers, but came away with two defeats on Saturday.

In the day's first matchup against the Cardinals (19-25, 25-13, 25-8, 25-10), Gwynedd ran away in the first set, thanks to a 7-0 run to give GM a 15-11 edge to pull away. CUA would return the favor in set two, as a 10-1 spurt paved the way.

Laura Kirk (Saegertown, Pa./Maplewood) had 10 kills to lead GM. The sophomore added 16 digs for her fourth double double. As a team, Gwynedd was 29-22-127 (0.55%).

Against the host Blazers, sophomore Kasey Loring (West Chester, Pa./West Chester) stood out with a career-high 13 kills. She would add seven digs, one ace, and a solo block.

After Hood won the first set, Gwynedd tried to rally late, coming from 24-20 to win three points in a row. But the Blazers took advantage of a hitting error to go on a go up 2-0. In the third set, the Griffins stormed out to a 10-3 lead, only to see Hood use a rally of their own to knot it up at 11-11 and would eventually notch the deciding victory. For the match, GM hit 28-24-133 (.030). Kirk would add a personal-best 25 digs.

The Griffins (5-10) will look to end their five-game slide this week with CSAC action on Thursday against defending conference champions Cabrini and with a tri-match on Saturday at home featuring Wells and Pratt.
