BOX SCOREABINGTON, PA. -- Penn State-Abington took down Gwynedd Mercy, 3-0, in non-conference action Tuesday night. Set scores were 25-22, 25-20, and 25-15.
It was a match of runs as the Lions put together a batch of points to pull away late in each set. Tied at 21-21 in the first, PSU would get four of the next five to take it, 25-21. In the second, an 8-1 spurt turned a 15-12 GM lead into a 20-16 advantage. Lastly in the final set a 12-12 tie was broken with the Lions notching 13 of the next 16 points, including the final five to close it out.
GM had 19 kills and 22 errors on 111 attempts (-.027), making it the second match this season with a negative hitting percentage. Sophomore
Laura Kirk (Saegertown, Pa./Maplewood) led the Griffins (5-7) with 22 digs and six kills. Juniors
Brianna Greer (Philadelphia, Pa./Bishop McDevitt) and
Lauren Tressel (Pembroke, Ma./Pembroke) each added five kills.
Sam Amaro led all attackers with 12 spikes. As a team, the Lions were 38-17-121 for a .174 hitting clip.
Gwynedd Mercy plays at Wesley College on Thursday in Dover, Delaware starting at 7 p.m.
