CHESTER, PA. -- Gwynedd Mercy notched their first shutout of the season and netted a season-high in scoring with a 5-0 win at Widener Tuesday night for their third win in a row.

The Griffin offense, who scored four of their five goals on the penalty corner, came out firing in just the third minute when freshman Abigail Gabriel (Telford, Pa./Souderton) connected on a shot that worked its way past several defenders for a 1-0 lead. Junior Katie O'Neill (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock North) then got into the act in the 10th minute, with a deflection off a shot from Brittany Wilson (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Lower Moreland) on a penalty corner to take a 2-0 edge.

O'Neill then got her third of the campaign in the 28th minute on another deflection, this time from Megan Senkeleski (Little Silver, N.J./Red Bank) to make 3-0. Wilson would notch her first goal of the season in the 32nd minute, firing home a shot from the top of the circle. Senior Brooke Oliver (Red Hill, Pa./Upper Perkiomen) added the assist.

It capped a half in which Gwynedd Mercy (3-2) dominated in shots (9-0) and a held a 7-1 advantage in penalty corners.

Freshman Melissa Russo (Saylorsburg, Pa./Pleasant Valley), who assisted on the Gabriel's goal in the first, scored in the 44th minute on a deflected shot from to close out the scoring.

Mikayla Ninos Maggie Karmeris combined to make 10 saves for Widener (2-4).

Senior Kelly Kruk (Phoenixville, Pa./Methacton) and Samantha Soscia (Lambertville, N.J./South Hunterdon) each played a half in goal to give the Griffins their first shutout on the year.

The Griffins welcome DeSales on Saturday with a 3 p.m. start.
