BOX SCOREDALLAS, PA.-- MIsericordia edged the Gwynedd Mercy Field Hockey Team, 3-2, in overtime on Friday in the season opener for the Griffins.
Goals from freshmen
Brianna O'Connell (Berlin, N.J./Eastern) and
Melissa Russo (Saylorsburg, Pa./Pleasant Valley) in the second half gave GM a one-goal lead. The Cougars' Jennifer O'Neill tied it with under five minutes in regulation and would add her second score of the day 7:01 into overtime.
Senior goalie
Kelly Kruk (Phoenixville, Pa./Methacton) made 14 saves, two shy of her personal-record, in the loss. MU's Angela Pasquini recorded 10 stops.
O'Connell's goal, an unassisted tally, came early in the second. Russo netted her goal in the 55th minute, with an assist from junior
Stephanie Bacho (Cinnaminson, N.J./Holy Cross).
Gwynedd had four penalty corners compared to Misericordia's seven and were outshot, 25-21.
The Griffins will get back at it on Sunday when they head to Farleigh Dickinson-Florham for a non-league tilt starting at 11:30 a.m.
