BOX SCORE Game 1 | BOX SCORE Game 2GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- The Griffin Softball Team played their final regular-season home games of the season but fell in two very close contests to Marywood on Senior Day. The Pacers won game one, 5-4, and the second, 6-4.
In game one, after GM scored a run in their first at-bat, Marywood plated four runs in the third and would tack on another in the fourth. That run was crucial as the Griffins put up three runs in the fifth on the strength of three RBI triples each from
Alexis Deal (Newtown, Pa./Council Rock South),
Marisa Bentley (Birdsboro, Pa./Daniel Boone) and
MaryKate Ballerino (Hatboro, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham). Bentley and Ballerino's three-baggers came with two outs.
GM would get the potential tying run at third base in the sixth, but was unsuccessful. They would get another crack in their final at-bat getting singles from senior
Stephanie Farrar (North Wales, Pa./North Penn) and
Jennifer Whalen (Philadelphia, Pa./Archbishop Ryan). Farrar would take third on Whalen's hit to center, and later Whalen would take second on a defensive indifference. Marywood starter Lindsey Gibbs would get the final out via strikeout to end it.
Gibbs totaled eight K's, and allowed four runs on 10 hits. Whalen gave up five runs on nine hits with four walks and two strikeouts while going 3-for-3 at the plate. Deal and Farrar each had two hits.
Game two saw the Pacers score runs in the sixth and seventh innings to erase a 4-1 Griffin lead.
Farrar would triple and score twice. Sophomore
Kelsey McDonough (Philadelphia, Pa./Little Flower) went 2-for-2 with two RBI's and a walk. Senior
Hillary Ware (Hedgesville, WVa./Hedgesville) added two hits and an RBI.
A lead off error in the second allowed a Marywood's Brooke Labs to reach. She would score on a RBI double for a 1-0 lead.
The Griffins would score a run in each of the second, third, fourth, and fifth innings. Ware's two-out RBI single came in the second. In the third, it was McDonough plating Farrar with a run-scoring double. Th fourth inning saw Bentley knock home Deal and McDouough would add her second RBI with a sac fly in the fifth.
Farrar got the start on the mound and went six innings, allowing just three earned runs on four hits with two walks and a strikeout.
After Whalen relieved Farrar in the seventh, Labs struck with an RBI triple as part of a two-spot in the frame to take a 6-4 lead.
GM would start the bottom of the seventh with three-straight walks to load the bases. Gibbs would come back in to pitch and get three strikeouts in a row to wrap up the sweep.
Between games, the coaching staff and team took time to honor the team's two seniors, Farrar and Ware, and their families as part of the senior day festivities.
Gwynedd Mercy (12-23, 12-10 CSAC) will play on Wednesday in a first-round playoff game of the 2014 CSAC Softball Tournament at Immaculata.
